Overview

Historic metal mining has affected geomorphology, hydrology and ecology of the South Tyne catchment for more than two centuries. Evidence for this activity is still present today in the form of abandoned infrastructure and mine waste throughout the catchment. These sites are part of a wider network of watercourses which contribute towards the metal contamination of the river Tyne and have been taken from a prioritised list produced by the Environment Agency (EA).
