A significant portion of the National Highways tunnels hav ebeen operational for over 30 years. In recent years (2017-2021) the operation and maintenance of some of these tunnels has been brought back into direct control of National Highways having previously been outsourced. Many of the critical technology assets that ensure safe operation of the tunnels are now becoming obsolete or are becoming life expired, resulting higher failure frequencies, higher maintenance costs and greater impacts on our customers.
