Toxicology testing is required as part of the GMC's Fitness to Practise proceedings in order to establish whether:a) there are any drug or alcohol related conditions that require the GMC to restrict a doctor's registration in order to maintain patient safetyb) individual doctors are complying with restrictions placed on their registration, for example to limit their consumption of alcohol or refrain from the use of drugs. This is mostly done through the use of blood and hair tests at present, although urine and breath tests can be carried out at the GMC's discretion.
